Just Thinking…

I seem to have a lot on my mind lately. It's been hard to settle down and put my thoughts down, and try to make sense of it. I have thought on some pretty random subjects this last couple of weeks. I have really considered how lucky I am to be so close to my sister. I have some really great friends in my life too, the ones you can call up and visit with like you see them every day, when you only see them in a blue moon. I am grateful for their influence in my life and for the good things they bring to me that help me define, and change things I need to about myself. You know, the kind of friends who know everything about you and like you anyway. My sister is like that. She knows my shortcomings and faults. She knows how crazy and emotional I can be - yes she has even witnessed several temper tantrums. She knows how much I love her and her family. I appreciate her talents, and her inspiration to me to keep going on the canning and getting prepared. We fuel each other and keep the fire going to do our part for our families well being. I love that our phone conversations are usually 2 minutes or less, but frequent. We don't have time to chat for hours, just check in often. I love that we both enjoy the dunes with our families, and can even get together at the same time down there sometimes. Maybe these things are on my mind because she had a birthday this week and I have thought about her a lot.
I have two sister-in-laws that are wonderful, talented ladies too. Married to my great, innovative and very skilled brother and brother-in-law. I wish I knew them better and will try harder to be a better friend and sister to them. My dream has always been to have a close knit family. I need to try harder to make that happen even more than it is now. We have a pretty great family as it is, but I know I can do more.
Also in the best friend category are my five beautiful daughters. I love all my girls. I love the things they all teach me daily about myself. I can improve a lot and need to. They are so very talented, and totally committed to their families. I get a kick out of watching them parent their kids, doing and saying things I know they said “I will never say that to my child,” when they were young. I hope my sons all know how much I love and appreciate them also. They too are committed to their families. Loving fathers, and good husbands (Robert will be) to their precious women.
I've been canning chicken this week. The chicken that made it into the freezer before Christmas, but not into the jars for one of the 12 days. Playing catch up with that now. I have 4 of the kids jars done and will do some more after the weekend. I need another chicken sale soon. Beans are next on the list, and then onto new and different territory in the canning field. Things to learn, techniques to master - better get on it.
Grumpy and I will be heading to the mountains this weekend with some friends. They invited us to spend the weekend with them in their cabin, and we are only too delighted to oblige. I am taking my camera, so will have some pics to share when we get back. It is so nice to go somewhere to relax, and do almost nothing. Our dream is to have a cabin too someday. I have such fond memories of my Grandpa and Grandma's cabin at Greer. Those were mostly happy, fun times and there weren't nearly enough of them.
Okay, enough rambling. I have my last batch of chicken in the canner, laundry to cycle and a book or solitaire to keep me busy 'til the chicken is done.

Now Belated Birthdays

In keeping with procrastinating pretty much everything this month, I am just now posting more birthdays for January. I'm off to a great start this year - it can only get better I hope.

Jake turned 14 on our dune trip this month. We are just getting to know him and are loving it. He is a very patient young man, and always willing to help. It was obvious he loves the dunes and can't get enough riding time in. He was ready to go anytime and could be found on the hills, at the Wall, over at Comp Hill and just a ways off camp. He even stayed behind for an extra day with us after Summer and Jamie left for home. Easy to get along with, fun to talk to and as you can see, a handsome dude too. We are so happy Jake is a part of our family now and are looking forward to more time with him. Hope you had a happy day at the dunes.

Kevin is another year older and wiser too. He is looking dapper in this pic that was taken at Summer and Jamie's wedding. I have so few pictures of him to choose from, probably because 1) I don't remember to actually take pictures so much of the time, and 2) he is usually playing with the kids somewhere or cooking something at our family functions. Kevin has such a generous nature and I love that he is always up for a party. He has many varied and unique talents and I know how very much he loves Taya and all his children. He strives to be a good husband and father and I hear he is now over one of the scout age groups. He will be great at that. I know by Taya's blog he had a great birthday, and even didn't mind turning a year older so much this year.

Gramma Harmon was traveling on her big day this year. Off to California to visit Harold and Gloria. She is such a wonderful lady, and Grumpy and I got to raid her cookie stash before they left on their trip. Gramma loves to bake, visit, help with dinner, cook you dinner, get her nails done, (hair day is almost sacred) and many other fun and crazy things that make her who she is. I think there are frequent trips to Baskin Robbins involved on some level, because if you ask her, she can tell you where they all are. I know she had a great time in California with her brother and sister-in-law because she looks forward to seeing them as much as she can.

Ryker, or should I say Rykee-Dog? He loves nick names and they change from day to day. Ryker is such a character. Grumpy took him for breakfast at The Waffle House and for his first plane ride Saturday. He wanted to fly the plane all by himself. He was having a great time and it lasted for a whole 15 minutes. He had achieved his maximum fun in the plane at that point and wanted to go back. Back they came for the date with the Waffle house. He ordered eggs, hash browns and toast. No waffle? Oh well, he ate the toast anyway. Too funny. He and his party entourage unloaded on Chuckie Cheese's to celebrate officially. Wow. You have to be deaf or very laid back to work there! Ryker had so much fun running around like his hair was on fire. Pizza, Pizza, Pizza. Play, Play, Play. What could be better? Oh yes, the delicious cake his Mommy made him. Chocolate of course. Love you Ryker, glad you are 6.

Already Slipping…

I guess the resolutions are going by the wayside unless I get myself in gear and get some things done. I haven't even been successful at getting Christmas down yet. I am going to do it tomorrow - at least most of it I hope. It wouldn't be so bad if the space it is going back into wasn't so clobbered up with stuff. I will endeavor to do better tomorrow. After all, to quote Miss Scarlet, “Tomorrow is another day”.

On a more positive note, I have had a great January so far. Decorations be damned - I am reading, canning, duning, planning more duning and planning Relief Society HFPE meetings. Oh yeah - and all the birthdays. January is an amazing month for birthdays. Did I mention resting a little? I'm doing that too. I'll get to the decorations sometime. In time. We had a fun homemaking thing on Tuesday. This meant I needed to shop, make a whole bunch of crepes, the filling and the toppings for them on Tuesday morning/afternoon since I was at the dunes until Monday night. All was ready to serve them to the ladies as they did their paper crafts. Everyone seemed to enjoy the time talking and learning to make some cute things for valentines day. I'm always so glad that things work out even when I procrastinate. The ladies teaching did a great job and I love the three things that were taught.

Cute bees in a bag. Fun and easy to do.

I love these paper fortune cookies that can carry any message you want. They are so pretty in the different valentine papers and in a cute little chinese take out box you can fold up. Easy and different than the garden variety valentine.

What a fun gift for moms, gramma's, really anyone who likes pictures. A mint tin photo album. Jade made two of these that night. They turned out so cute.

Last, but tasting the best were the crepes. I love crepes. I blended a filling of cream cheese, cottege cheese, powdered sugar and vanilla in the Cuisinart. Very smooth and then colored pink of course. Filled the crepes, topped with whipped cream in the middle, strawberries on one side, roasted raspberry chipotle on the other with a chocolate drizzle over all. I had seconds because they were so yummy. Got the filling recipe from Taya and Kevin, got the chipotle from costco (so good) as well as the strawberries. We have a few left over and I'm not complaining.

Off to bed now so that maybe there's a snowball's chance in you know where that I might actually get some decorations down tomorrow.

We Got More Sand…

I am really getting behind on the posting thing. I will just have to do the birthday posts later when I can get some decent pictures of the birthday victims. For now, I will post some pictures from our dune trip of last weekend. So much fun. Summer and Jamie and kids were with us for the first time and it was so much fun to have them there with us. Everyone is always so good to share quads, rhinos, helmet, gloves and goggles. It gives everyone who wants to ride the opportunity to do so. Stacie and R.B. are great hosts and share their toy hauler space, so Summer and Jamie's family stayed at the Harmon Hilton Hauler. We had the Mower/Harmon Hotel and made space for Jade and Jeff's family with us. This was one of the most enjoyable trips, probably because the kids played well, the adults enjoyed each other's company and we all worked together to make this a great memory. I am still so thankful for the work all the dads put in to keep the kids quads running, keep the kids from running over each other, (Carsen took out a lawn chair once this trip) and taking the kids out on little rides to give them experience. The mom's all work at food, snacking, keeping the peace, riding when they can and making everyone comfortable.
R.B. hooked up his satellite so everyone could watch the game. It was fun to watch in the toy hauler as the Cardinals won their place in the superbowl. I didn't watch it, but I heard the cheers coming from the open doors.
I am so thankful for children who like to play together. Big and small. It does my mother's heart good to see my grown-up kids enjoy their time together. They still tease each other, joke at each other's expense and serve and help one another. So when you are mad at your kids, and you wonder why you had them in the first place, (of course I wouldn't know anything about that feeling…) I promise it does pay off. I love all mine so very much.

The Armstrongs with us for the first time. We have had Taylor, Jordyn and Rylee with us before, and Summer was down once, but it was a first for the Armstrongs as a family to come have fun in the sand. We were missing their oldest, J.T., and hope he will be able to come with us sometime.

Tawna, Jade, Stacie and Crystal who was visiting with her brother Jake for the trip.

Summer, Jake and Jordyn enjoying the sand, the breeze and sitting down.

Austin and Grumpy on Comp hill after Austin rolled his quad trying to go up Comp. He got up and Grumpy went to help him get the quad back up on all fours and make sure Austin was okay to go. All was well, Austin was just ticked that he couldn't quite make it to the top.

Jeff and some of the boys hangin' out by the Rhino. Or the Rhiner as Carsen says.

Tawna and Faith

Carsen having so much fun with the trucks and the unlimited supply of sand to pile in and on everything. He, Chance and Aden could play in the sand forever I think.

Megan and Rylee hanging out in the little sand car.

Jordyn being teased by none other than R.B. He is the king of tease and has so much fun with the kids.

Chance on his quad with Ryker and Jaxon in the background.

The boys playing catch.

I had to put this picture in to say how much I appreciate Jamie and his patience. He had just loaded up the Yukon and Taylor comes over and lifts up the back hatch to put something else in. Of course everything came tumbling out and piled on the sand. Jamie never said a cross word, never gave any indication he was frustrated by this. He just closed the hatch, opened just the window part and he and Taylor put everything back in. He is such a good man and treats Summer and all the kids so wonderfully. What a good example of how not to be mad and get dramatic about the mistakes kids make. All of us really. This was after a crazy trip towing our jeep that needs work on the steering. Tawna and Nathan ended up driving it, and that was no fun either. Thanks kids for not pushing it off a cliff - although that may not be such a bad idea sometimes. It did help to get us all back to the Wall, which is why I wanted to take it in the first place. We'll have to get it fixed so it won't be such a nightmare next time.

This picture of the sunset on Saturday night doesn't do it justice. If my camera battery had held out just a few more minutes, it was truly so very beautiful. Grumpy is in the corner, sitting as he so often is with a grandchild on his lap (in this case Megan). He is so loved by them and is good to play, sit, ride, and even let himself be covered in sand by our grandkids. I sure picked a good one when I let him catch me. Stacie made great soups for Sunday night, Summer and Jamie made good Chili for lunch and awesome Spaghetti for dinner Saturday, we had cheese spread on crackers and for sandwiches, Grumpy's famous Yucka burros and some good pancakes and eggs for breakfast. Thanks to all who came, saw and had fun. I am really looking forward to the couples trip coming up. I hope we can work out all our schedules so we can make the trip happen.

Sunday, Happy and Sad

Riley's birthday has been properly celebrated. A BBQ, 2 cakes, a double chocolate fudge pie, individual cartons of Ben and Jerry's and some gifts. What more could a sweet little DQ (drama queen) want? We had lots of fun tonight and were glad we could get together and have the happy noise that accompanies so many people having fun.

I can't help but be thinking of the Smith family tragedy at the same time. I can't even express how sad I feel at their loss. I wish there was something I could do to help them. I will keep them in my prayers and hope they will be comforted. I will take Jacque's advice and hold my family close. You never know when your life will change. All you can do is be grateful every day for the blessings you have. I know our Father in Heaven loves us, and I am thankful for the knowledge of his plan for us. Without that, I don't know how people can handle the grief and heartache of having to be separated by death for a time.

I am so profoundly thankful for my family. I love you all so very much.

January - The Birthday Month!

We have just a few birthdays in January as seen in the side panel. Good month to have a baby in Arizona, nice and cool. We went to a nice sort of surprise party for Papa H's “80th” this week. Gramma did a great job getting a spread of chips, dips, crackers, spreads, and of course Birthday cake all laid out for the many people that came to express their Birthday Wishes. It was so nice to see so many in our family there. I had to “borrow” this pic of Papa from Jacque's blog as I forgot my camera that night. We had a great time talking to everyone, meeting neighbors and friends and enjoying the food.

On the Record for 2009

It's 2:30 am and I am not sleeping. Maybe it's knowing that Grumpy goes back to work, the grandkids go back to school, and I have to get serious about getting the rest of the Christmas stuff down and put away. I have been reluctant to de-Christmas the house. Okay, I'm just dreading re-doing the storage room everything goes back in. It's a project and I'm in denial. More of the going through and streamlining and I just need to get it done.

We have a few weeks of Valentine stuff to see at the stores, and plan special stuff for. Maybe I can figure out some romantic thing to do for Grumpy. For now I will concentrate on getting some laundry done so he will have something to put on, and planning a few meals so he can not have to eat out somewhere. He eats out a lot in his travels, so he loves it when he can eat something however simple at home. I have come to understand (again) in the last few weeks what a homemade bread junkie he is. One of the things I vow to work on this month is to make sure he has a loaf or two on hand to chew on. I was not feeling up to par today, so took some time to just rest and do some things on the computer. Papa went out to Rachael and Scott's to see Boss blessed and stayed for dinner. It was so nice to hear about that from his perspective. We had enchilada's here and he had a small stack. Grumpy did a great job, but was not happy with his enchilada sauce. We still have not found a recipe we love for that yet. Jade baked a chocolate cake and needed my help with the frosting. Wow. I'll bet it's a long time before she asks for my help again. Apparently my off day included cooking because I messed it up royally! It tasted okay, but I got things a little out of whack proportionally, and it wouldn't set up. She had made two rounds to stack this time and the frosting in the middle will probably never set up. We decided to call it Granny's special mud slide cake so the kids would still eat it. It just looked awful. Once you get it into a glass and pour milk on it the way we do it didn't matter so much. Oh well, life goes on.

Got two dozen pints of BBQ sauce canned Saturday. I had all the stuff to do it, and knew if I didn't get to it soon it wouldn't get done. I got a bunch of half pints washed and ready to do some butter maybe tomorrow. I can find all kinds of excuses not to get the decorations down. We went and saw “seven pounds” on Friday. The movie was well done and Will Smith is a fine actor, but I am not into depressing movies and don't like the storyline at all. I am glad to know it is not a candidate for my movie library. We saw R.B. and Stacie on their way into the theater to see it, and we told them not to waste their time and money. They went to see something else instead along with Summer and Jamie.

I'm thinking of doing some fondue this month, so if anyone has a recipe for a good, mild, cheese fondue, let me know. We usually do meats and vegetables, sometimes tempura with dipping sauces, but I've never done a cheese fondue. I remember as a Junior in high school, we did fondue on our back patio after one of the formals. It must have been a Christmas formal as Papa had attached heavy plastic all around the eaves to make the patio enclosed so it could be warmer. We had a lot of fun, and I even remember the funny plates we used. They were a yellow/gold color and looked like elephant footprints. Where the toes would have been were the little places we put different dipping sauces. In the big part we put our baked potatoes and the meat when it finished cooking. I think we used the Japanese sake cups Papa and Nana had for yet another sauce. It was fun and unique and I loved that I could always count on doing something a little out of the box where dinners were concerned.

Time to try sleeping again. Maybe with more success this time. I finished my book, I'm not doing laundry this late and I hate to wake up Grumpy with my tossing and turning. Tylenol PM is looking pretty good about now.
